The Return of the Bricks and Mortar Bookstore to Downtown New Rochelle!
Haven’t yet had time to visit? Here’s the skinny on what to expect.
Finally, you can once more pull brand new, pristine novels and nonfiction volumes from the shelves of a bookstore in downtown New Rochelle, carefully tease them open and enjoy the scent of fresh pages. The new Barnes & Noble at New Roc City has opened as a combination of a Monroe College bookstore and a place for everyone to buy their best sellers, high literature and volumes on topics from parenting to history.
If you found yourself believing that the bookstore is dead in American downtowns, you need to stop by here to soak in the scene, complete with a big-windowed Starbucks coffee shop adjacent to the Regal Cinemas multiplex. (Making New Roc City one of those places where you can see a movie and buy the book in the same spot.)
This is a clever concept, blending the Monroe College supply shop with books for all ages. Monroe College mugs, hats, sweatshirts are for sale, alongside a wide assortment of children’s toys, hostess gifts, and also merchandise from the Star Wars and Harry Potter universes. On the shelves you’ll find the popular, the classic and everything else: Junot Diaz, Charles Dickens, Jodi Picoult, James Patterson, Julia Alvarez, Margaret Atwood,Geraldine Brooks…. Palahniuk and Vonnegut, Hiaasen and Grafton too!
There’s plenty of space in the café area to plug in a laptop and get some work done. Like the bookstore, the Starbucks counter is also a hybrid. Check out the touches of New Rochelle flair, including framed posters of Saturday Evening Post covers by Norman Rockwell, painter of Americana and one of the city’s favorite sons.
The store offers a full schedule of events including an open mic night on Fridays, a “Weekend Wind Down” yoga session on Sundays, story time for early readers and Wednesday book club meetings. For details, they ask that you email TheRoyalFleur@gmail.com.
So now you’ve got a place to go to buy the book you’ve been looking for, or to browse for new releases, maybe kill some time before your movie starts. Whatever your reason for stopping in, it’s another great reason to visit downtown.
