Parades, Crafts, Exhibits and Mariachi Bands Welcome the Holidays Downtown

If you can believe it, the holidays are upon us. And downtown is the place to celebrate, and to pay tribute. Start the month by enjoying the spirited BID “Day of the Dead” Family Day" celebration on November 1st  with crafts and a Mariachi Band and see the traditional “El Día de los Muertos” Mexican Ofrenda Exhibit. In time to commemorate Veteran’s Day on November 11th, a special, moving exhibit “Poignant Portraits: Honoring Veterans and Fallen Soldiers” will open November 6th in New Rochelle Library’s Lumen Winter Gallery. Then on November 20th, the ever popular 50th Annual Valenti New Rochelle Thanksgiving Parade, presented by the Chamber of Commerce, fills downtown’s streets. Also starting November 20th, the BID 2nd Annual Holiday Crafts Market will occur weekends through December 19th at BID Gallery 249.

Digital Art Classes for Teenagers and Adults – Downtown!

Downtown is emerging as an exciting arts center offering increased opportunities for the public to not just view the arts, but also to participate. This month, Downtown Happenings features the MediaArts Centre, located at the BID Artist Studio Building at 81 Centre Avenue, opposite Talner Jewelry and Yoga Arts of Westchester (which was reviewed last month), 10,000 square feet of newly renovated space for artists and art businesses (914-960-1460 for rental information).

Founded by New Rochellean educator Steve Brock, MediaArts Centre houses artist production space, a gallery (two recent shows: “The Photography of Chi Modu” and “Microsoft –xbox” received international press), as well as workshops for all ages in the fine, digital, graphic, and music arts. MORE »

RESTAURANT REVIEW
Alvin and Friends

Lynn Green and her husband Steve have been among the early diners with rave reviews at downtown’s newest restaurant, Alvin and Friends. Lynn has lived in New Rochelle for 32 years. She and Steve, an Orthopedic Surgeon, specializing in surgery of the hand, have two grown children, both of whom attended New Rochelle schools. Lynn is Vice President for Development at Family Services of Westchester. She is also very supportive of New Rochelle organizations. Among her community activities she helped found the New Rochelle Public Library Foundation and is still an active Board member. She is also a Vice President of the New Rochelle Council on the Arts. She and her husband Steve enjoy relaxing from their busy lives by dining at downtown restaurants where they know they will always meet good friends. MORE »
