Although Habitat for Humanity of Westchester County has been headquartered in New Rochelle for the past several years, it’s only recent that the international nonprofit ecumenical housing ministry has begun building and renovating in its host city. It now has five projects underway. To help pay for this ambitious building program, Habitat, a New Rochelle Downtown tenant, has teamed up with the New Rochelle BID, downtown restaurants and other neighboring businesses to help generate both fiscal and grassroots support for its efforts.
On August 2nd, “Habitat for Humanity Day” will be observed in New Rochelle, culminating with that evening with the screening of the BID’s “Movie Under the Stars ” free outdoors movie on Library Green at 8:45 PM. The feature film is “Night at the Museum.”
The promotional campaign for Habitat was kicked off at the opening of the BID’s Jazz on Library Green series, July 12th, and will run through August 5th. “BID Bucks” were distributed to hundreds of people in attendance to encourage dining at one of several New Rochelle Downtown restaurants that have agreed to donate a percentage of the breakfast, lunch or dinner tab of anyone who presents to their waiter a “BID Bucks” certificate at the time they are seated.
So far, the participating restaurants are Cholo’s Peruvian, Coyote Flaco, Coromandel Cuisine of India, DaVinci’s Café Italian Ristorante, Gallery Café, Mexican Corner Restaurant, Tower Café, and Villarina’s Restaurant. Several of the participating restaurants have also agreed to donate $25 gift certificates which will be drawn in a free raffle at “Movie Under the Stars.”
Other downtown merchants and tenants that have agreed to participate as sponsors of “Habitat for Humanity Day,” August 2nd, are Modern Hardware and Avalon on the Sound.
BID Bucks will again be distributed at the July 19th and July 26th Jazz on Library Green concerts, both of which begin at 6:30 PM, and are available at participating restaurants.
