Close to 300 children and their parents and grandparents joined in the fun at the fourth annual “BID Family Saturdays” Kick-off Party on Saturday, October 3, 2009.The Ossie Davis Theater was filled to capacity for a performance of ballet, beautifully executed by student dancers of the Ballet Atlantic Academy, at 81 Centre Avenue (corner of Main Street). Martial arts students and teachers from the Brazilian Capoeira Performance Center, at 529 Main Street (entrance on Division Street) then demonstrated their extraordinary movements and percussion sounds. The craft-making tables were filled with a variety of interesting and inexpensive supplies from downtown’s variety stores, which were transformed into jeweled boxes, woven baskets, and a variety of critters by participants who were guided by BID teachers and teen assistants. In keeping with the theme, “Downtown is Global!”, refreshments included an array of breads from around the world – all purchased in downtown bakeries. The Westchester Children’s Museum was also on hand with several projects and information on the new museum planned for a renovated bathhouse at Playland, in Rye. Rounding out the event, face painters magically transformed the expressions of almost all the young attendees.

The “BID Family Saturdays”, which began during 2006 -2007 school year, will again include International Mini-Fests, live performances, craft workshops, scavenger hunts, and other activities geared for school-aged children and their parents. The programs take place two or three Saturdays (and occasionally on a Sunday) each month in the Ossie Davis Park at Library Green or the New Rochelle Public Library, through June 26, 2010. An initiative of the New Rochelle Downtown BID (Business Improvement District), the “BID Family Saturdays” program is conducted in partnership with the Public Library, the City School District and PTA Council, and the Department of Parks & Recreation.
