New Rochelle BID will present a “Downtown Showcase” featuring five New Rochelle interior designers and products from more than twenty-five downtown businesses. The painters have finished (generously donated by Von Mach Enterprises Inc.) and the vision for the two and three bedroom apartments with towering views at Avalon on the Sound East is taking shape. The designers Michelle Sanchez Boyce, Venera Evanko, Susan Simone Halliburton, Timothy McVey and Chenoa Maxwell are using merchandise exclusively from businesses within the BID district.
The showcase opens to the public starting with ticket holders to the House Tour on October 25th when the apartments are featured in the 12th Annual Accent on New Rochelle House Tour to benefit the Solomon Katz Breast Center at Sound Shore Medical Center. Showcase Overview
During the past decade, downtown New Rochelle has become increasingly residential with projects such as Davenport Lofts, 543 Main Street Condominiums, Trump Plaza, Avalon on the Sound, and Avalon on the Sound East. As a result, New Rochelle now has a new lifestyle choice—urban living. This lifestyle has been attracting many young professionals, families, and empty nesters who want car free access to the train station, goods and services, and dining and entertainment as well as on-site amenities and maintenance free leisure. And many want to enjoy the drama of the incredible light and the towering views offered by a high rise apartment. While this urban lifestyle has attracted many new residents to downtown, the New Rochelle Business Improvement District (BID) realized that many people are not familiar with downtown living. The BID decided one way to introduce the community to urban living would be through a BID Downtown Showcase.
Avalon on the Sound East generously donated the use of a three bedroom and a two bedroom apartment on the 23rd and 24th floors respectively. The BID asked five talented designers, all from New Rochelle to help decorate the apartments: Venera Evanko, Venera Evanko Design with Lynn Breindel, LB Interiors, Susan Simone Halliburton, Lothrop Associates, LLP, Chenoa Maxwell, Photographer, Timothy McVey, Tapestry Design, Michelle Sanchez Boyce, Simplicity Designs.
In order to make this truly a Downtown Showcase the BID required that the designers furnish and outfit the two apartments exclusively using businesses and services from within the BID district, which encompasses New Rochelle’s Historic downtown. As a result, as the designers have searched for merchandise to fit out their design visions, they have become frequent visitors to Main Street New Rochelle and have discovered many known and less well known downtown businesses.
To further support the concept of a Downtown Showcase, the BID also created a profile for each family who would reside in each apartment. Therefore each designer had an additional challenge: to demonstrate his or her talent by creating wonderfully attractive homes that would respond to the needs and personalities of the family members. Finally, the designers faced the additional constraint of not being able to make changes to the basic floor plan of each rental apartment.
We think you will be impressed with the talent our designers have displayed. The designs that they have formulated for each apartment are different, as are the families residing there.
The project is fortunate to have four Chair People who have devoted their time and energy and have freely lent merchandise and products from their stores to make this project successful. In addition, Frederick von Mach generously donated the painting of both apartments.

Candice Denslow noted: “We are very fortunate to have five outstanding designers working together with local businesses to create a showcase highlighting the many benefits of living and shopping downtown. Surrounding communities are showing a renewed interest in our downtown. We feel it is important to provide them with a distinctive and enjoyable way to get to know us better. The BID Downtown Showcase will be a great experience for all.”
