Three Sizzling Dance Parties In Downtown New Rochelle

The hot sounds of Zydeco from Louisiana, steel drums from Trinidad and Tobago, plus samba and jazz from Brazil will transform New Rochelle’s Library Green into festive dance parties on three Thursday evenings this summer, when the perennially popular BID Music on the Green concert series takes center stage in downtown New Rochelle. Sponsored by Avalon on the Sound, the concerts are free to all and begin at 6:30 pm.

The series kicks off on Thursday, July 16, 2009 when Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas bring their fabulous energy and up-tempo Cajun sounds to downtown New Rochelle. Nathan William’s stylings on the piano accordion have made him one of the most-admired players on the Zydeco scene, following in the footsteps of Clifton Chenier and Buckwheat Zydeco. The boisterous and talented Chas Chas are Dennis Paul Williams on guitar, Mark Anthony Williams on rubboard, Nathan Williams, Robert LeBlanc on bass and Herman 'Rat' Brown (formerly with Buckweat Zydeco for many years) on drums. Free Zydeco dance lessons will be offered before the show.

The 16-piece Pantonic Steelband Orchestra , five-time champion of the prestigious Panorama competition, will perform an astounding array of musical selections on Thursday, July 23. From Caribbean to jazz, R&B, popular and rap on steel drums, the Brooklyn-based group of young people has a special combination of musical excellence and dynamic drive. Their direct musical and blood lineage as children and grandchildren of the legendary members of Steel Orchestras such as Desperadoes, All Stars and Renegades bring a legitimacy and fiery edge to their performances.

The sizzling sounds of Brazilian Samba & Jazz with the Nanny Assis Group will wrap-up the series in Latin style on Thursday, July 30. World-renowned percussionist, vocalist and composer Nanny Assis is one of the most sought-after Brazilian musicians. Awarded best percussionist by the Bahia Instrumental Festival, Assis plays to rave reviews at Manhattan clubs B. B. King’s and S.O.B.’s. Assis will be joined by Arthur Lipner (vibes), Cidinho (keyboard), Itaiguara (bass), Benny Koonyevsky (drums), and Adriana Kuadros (vocals). Free dance lessons before the show will help audience members get in the groove.

Ralph DiBart, Executive Director of the New Rochelle BID stated: “Downtown New Rochelle is increasingly becoming a popular destination for music, dining and the arts. This year, the BID’s free Music on the Green series will be complimented with al fresco dining at more than a dozen restaurants and cafes as part of our Dine Downtown 2009, and arts events in conjunction with the BID’s new Artist Spaces Program. The time to enjoy downtown New Rochelle is now.”

The BID has been active in promoting downtown with its popular Dine Downtown 2009 Campaign, Artist Spaces Program, Summer Music on the Green, Outdoor Movies and BID Family Saturdays. The BID constantly pursues new venues to encourage people to frequent
downtown. The BID’s goals are to promote economic development, provide sanitation services, beautify public spaces, create enhanced technology services, pursue the historic restoration of building facades,  and support the attraction of new and the retention of existing businesses in Downtown New Rochelle. In its eight year history, the BID’s efforts have resulted in $80 million of new, private, taxpaying downtown development.
