510 Main Street

[ Back to History ]

Since 1927 New Rochelle children have been walking through the doors of 510 Main Street to buy their seasonal wardrobes. Unlike any other Main Street store, founded by Herman Liebman and his partner, Herman Pinals, Liebman's has been in its same location for almost 70 years.

The building itself evokes a wonderful sense of time, place and pride. When the major part of the structure was constructed in 1875, it was designed in an Italianate-style popular of the period, constructed of brick with wood and metal trim, and included such ornamentation as dentils below the eaves and curved molding over the windows. As a result of appropriate restorations in the early 1980s and late 1990s, 510 Main Street provides a vibrant glimpse of earlier times. Step inside, and you’ll find a full array of the best in contemporary children’s clothing – all displayed under an original, beautifully detailed, tin ceiling. You’ll probably meet the “new kid on the block” as well. Since 1997, John Newman has been Jerry Stillman’s associate, and he will someday run the business, using the same skills his boss has employed to make such a successful and enduring shop.

“Just yesterday, I had a woman in here shopping for her great grandchild,” Jerry Stillman recently related. “Of course I knew her by name - we outfitted her kids and grand kids!"

Since the 1980s Liebman’s has offered discounted prices on quality children's clothes. Today, from all parts of Westchester, parents come here for those lovely clothes and those lovely deals; school and scout uniforms; and the friendly, personalized service characteristic of Main Street. America.
