The New Rochelle Downtown Grand Market Opens Saturday, June 1 with New Events and Programs and of course, Food, Food, Food!
New Rochelle, NY, May 29, 2013 – Saturday, June 1 at 9 a.m. marks the opening of the New Rochelle Downtown Grand Market. The festive neighborhood market features more than 25 weekly and guest vendors selling local farm-fresh produce, meats, cheeses, baked goods and other specialty foods. The market showcases artisanal products and crafts and a weekly featured downtown restaurant as part of the BID’s Dine Downtown al fresco market dining court. The Grand Market is sponsored by the New Rochelle Downtown Business Improvement District (NRBID), Monroe College and Green Mountain Energy and will be held every Saturday from June 1 through October 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Library Green next to the New Rochelle Public Library on Huguenot Street between Memorial Highway and Lawton Street.
“We want our Grand Market to not only bring healthy farm-fresh and local produce to residents of New Rochelle and surrounding communities, but also to serve as a festive community gathering place bringing people to their reawakened, revitalized and vibrant downtown,” said Ralph DiBart executive director of the NRBID. The market had previously been held on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. which contributed to a lower turnout as many working families could not take advantage of it. Councilman Ivar Hyden, a long strong proponent of a Saturday market noted that “moving the market to Saturdays will allow many working New Rochelleans and surrounding community residents to shop, eat and celebrate the rich diversity of our city on a day where many naturally spend time buying food for their family.”
Mayor Noam Bramson and many community leaders responsible for developing the Grand Market will attend an opening ceremony at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 1. Opening day will also feature the launch of new programs including musical entertainment by Louie Miranda. Louie is a hit with all ages, as he involves everyone in his fabulous music, stories and movements – with an enthusiastic Latin beat. We will also have Sweet by Jana as a featured vendor from our Brooklyn Eats on the Road partnership. The featured restaurant of the week will be the newly expanded Alvin & Friends featuring some of its highly rated contemporary Caribbean cuisine. In addition, we will have ready to eat food vendors and café style seating for patrons.
“We hope the combination of local farms, food entrepreneurs and family events and programs will provide a lively market experience for shoppers and vendors alike” says Bo Kemp, New Rochelle resident and owner of Urban Fresh Food Markets, the market’s new manager. “I look forward to growing this market into a weekly destination for New Rochelle and surrounding communities.” The market has started to create a buzz and anticipates hundreds of shoppers weekly on Library Green. “New Rochelle residents sense a budding renaissance in their downtown, with more shops, restaurants and now the Grand Market. What better than a weekly food market to bring together the diverse population of our city? The Grand Market is a new focal point for the community and we are thrilled to be able to participate as vendors, shoppers and eaters” said Ellen Dupuy d’Angeac, New Rochelle resident and downtown business owner.
