Discover the rich, living legacy of jazz music, its American roots and its emerging musicians, with jazz aficionado Greg Thomas. In the five free sessions using recorded music and video clips, Mr. Thomas will trace the development of jazz – the role of the rhythm section in creating the “swing” pulse, the key values of improvisation and the function of the blues, while highlighting iconic artists such as Louis Armstrong, Art Tatum, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young,  Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Strayhorn, Sarah Vaughan, Clifford Brown, Sonny Rolllins and John Coltrane.

Ossie Davis Theater. Free. Made possible by the Lillian Robbins Memorial Fund.

Fridays, April 9 – May 7, 2010, from 3:30 – 4:30 pm
