In 1946, talented young Russian doctor Alexei -- accompanied by his French bride Marie and his son -- optimistically returns home to the a post-war Soviet Union, only to be faced with interrogations, shared apartments, suspicious neighbors and lack of privacy. He quickly adapts, but Marie starts to rebel against the circumstances. When she meets up with a touring French actress, she soon must make a choice: leave her husband and child for freedom, or stay and confront a grim future.
