Concerts Bring in Big and Local Names
LONG-RUNNING music series must change or grow stale, says Rob J. Seitz Jr., who helps produce Jazz on Library Green in New Rochelle every summer. The New Rochelle Business Improvement District, which has presented the concerts since 2001, continues its tradition of big name performers on July 17, when the Latin trumpeter and percussionist Ray Vega opens the three-concert series (all beginning at 6:30 p.m.).

Trump, Cappelli throw party for New Rochelle's Trump Plaza
NEW ROCHELLE - Now that Trump Plaza is open, the celebrity developer whose name it bears made another visit last night to celebrate, and took another chance to talk grandly of it. "It's been an amazing joy. It's an amazing building," Donald Trump told a crowd of 300 gathered in front of the downtown tower at 175 Huguenot St. With some 35 families already making the tower their home and more moving in, Trump and the building's developer, Louis Cappelli, threw a party last night. Attending were local officials, new residents and prospective buyers considering paying the prices from the mid-$500,000s to $1.7 million for the units.

Queen City of the Sound polishes her crown
On the second floor of 565 Main St. in downtown New Rochelle, construction of two residential lofts is ongoing in a space that has been vacant for more than 10 years. The future lofts sit above Talner Jewelers, a longtime city business. Owner Albert Tarantino, a lifelong New Rochelle resident, believes there is a market for the live-and-work lofts he is creating, scheduled to be finished in October. By utilizing loan programs offered by the city’s business improvement district (BID), he said, “It was a no-brainer to do this.” The lofts are the latest in a long line of downtown redevelopment projects spurred by the BID’s various loan programs. “One of the reasons we’re successful is because of the BID,” Tarantino said.

Golf Outing Draws 15,000
As predicted, the HSBC Women’s World Match Play Championship was a boon to local business in New Rochelle, though early estimates showed not as many spectators came as were expected. The four-day tournament at Wykagyl Country Club on North Avenue drew approximately 15,000 spectators, said tournament director Jason Soucy. Before the event, tournament officials had hoped to draw closer to 30,000.

As the New Rochelle skyline grows taller, the look of commercial buildings closer to the ground in the city's downtown is undergoing a transformation of its own.
